Growing up as Mormons in Montana, Elyse and Larena’s upbringing exposed them to racism, homophobia, and sexism that made them ashamed to be women. The sisters read scripture every morning and prayed daily, brainwashed by the teachings of their church. For the duo, making music is about reclaiming their narrative and offers a way to heal, exploring the religious hypocrisy and insane expectations placed on women that governed their upbringing. Contrasting ethereal vocals with gritty instrumentals, the juxtaposing sound of MOTHERMARY is extremely specific and uniquely theirs.
Splitting studio time between New York City and Los Angeles over the past two years, MOTHERMARY released their mesmerising debut I Am Your God via Italians Do It Better in 2022.
